For this accessibility audit, I’ll be scoring the DIGITAL Design + Development website out of 5 to assess the overall accessibility of the website. The total score is out of 5. Each assessment criteria is a pass/fail value worth 10% of the final score. All criteria are adapted from this week’s course material, primarily the slides and the W3C website.

PERCEIVABLE (1.5/1.5)

  • Are descriptive text alternatives available for non-text media?
    • Yes. Alt-text for images is embedded into HTML and displayed as subheaders.
  • Is content displayed in a way that it can be changed/adapted within the browser to suit user needs?
    • Yes. Zooming in on a browser does not cause any text or media to be hidden.
  • Are transcripts or captions available for multimedia content that may be unsuitable for users with vision/hearing disabilities?
    • Yes. None is needed as this site does not contain any audio or video media.

OPERABLE (1.5/1.5)

  • Is the content of the website easy to find and navigate?
    • Yes. All pages are linked in the same header that is clearly displayed on every page. Page titles are straightforward and accurate.
  • Are all functions performed with a mouse alternatively accessible by keyboard?
    • Yes. After adjusting settings on a Mac computer to allow full keyboard control, the website functions as expected with shortcuts to select elements or to move the pointer using ‘Mouse Keys’.
  • Does the website contain any multimedia content that may be harmful to photosensitive users? If so, are warnings and options to disable presented?
    • No. All images are static. A slideshow animation showing static images is presented on the homepage, but moves slowly and predictably.

UNDERSTANDABLE (1.5/1.5)

  • Is the website’s design consistent, predictable, and cohesive?
    • Yes. As stated, content is easy to navigate. Additionally, each webpage has near-identical structure. Content is categorized with clear headers and distinct topics.
  • Does the website help to ensure that user inputs are correct?
    • Yes. There is one form available in the Contact page. If a required field is missing or if input is invalid, a notice appears that clearly indicates what is missing or incorrect.
  • Does text on the website appear clearly and legibly for all users? Does the website use plain-language, avoiding idioms or obscure words?
    • Yes. Font, contrast, spacing, and plain-language use all appear appropriate. Sentences are succinct.

ROBUST (0.5/0.5)

  • Does the website retain its level of accessibility across different browser and operating systems?
    • Yes, criteria were checked across Safari on macOS, google chrome, Firefox, and Safari on iOS

TOTAL SCORE: 5/5
